The avantgarde is dead, long live the avantgarde, or: old garde against avant-garde...
As long as it is possible to gain consciousness of a certain social status quo, a socio-economic, political nexus of cultural actions and reactions in a certain state of historic vacuum, unconscious collective forces of destruction, leading cultural movements sustaining artlike expressions excluding art as an exception, there is the possibility alive to set advanced positions: these advanced positions mean self sufficient art itself - not "art pour l'art" - but art that is subversive and political by itself without any impositions. Every crucial act of life is "avantgarde" transgressing the mere factor of cultural sustention.
As long as certain works of art will transgress the idealistic illusion of a historic "whole", a whole of homogenic psycho- and sexual-economic ensembles, there will be existing some sort of "avantgarde". In case of any avantgarde phenomenon every try for historiography seems even more senseless than in other cases concerning postpolitical attempts. Any cultural structure that sets no advanced positions is doomed to die. Every esthetic process is stifled when avantgarde is understood as "télos", working by beginning and end, as a mere even "revolutionary" historic phase with before and after, as a process with a certain aim that can be fulfilled or failed. Avantgarde is not avantgarde because a public majority is def and blind for it, but because it is advanced compared to a certain psychological state of a society and culture. Avantgarde is advanced and most archaic, symbolic, Aion, Kairos, cast out from the ordinary signs of historic time, driven by insight and access to deeper layers of the social unconscious. It does not mean the death of death as history but death as a process, which is the subversive act of life itself, the exceptional, singular material of ART.
Today avantgarde in motion picture could mean operating between digital video and analogue film material, building consciousness of what this means for existence and thinking. But avantgarde today has many other scopes. People talking about the death or "end" of this and that are the perfect slaves for a cultural marketplace, even if they get the tag "advanced" by certain public organs. The most decadent state might be reached again soon it seems by the cycle of rotten offical western culture, the state of fascism and mass delusion, the church state of pre-fascism is long reached marked by certain signs as for instance the speaking about "death" or "end" of avantgardistic powers in all fields of creation. Wanting the death of the exception in Godards words is the perfect state for any aristotelian social organism that desires to sustain its telos, to fulfill its function. But the death of such functional organisms is what the advanced creation sees, de-functus, disfunction for one side, act of life itself for the other.
After all, as avantgardist John Cage said: "Self alteration, not self expression..."

The Glorious Land - PJ Harvey

An alternate video to PJ Harvey's song "The Glorious Land" from the 2011 album "Let England Shake". We felt some urgency to make an alternate video to that song due to the fact that the (official?) video series to PJ's songs does not seem to have enough quality to be eye to eye with PJ's marvelous music. Moreover we live in a time, and this music is intensively part of that time, where we have a new holy trinity of "allied" forces to interfer with civil wars in cultures with roots never understood - while princes will marry in golden coaches...!
Thank you PJ Harvey for the best contemporary singer/songwriter music you do for many years now! May this not be erased by people claiming "rights", for the sake of encouraged art today beyond personal selfish interests...

Ode to Ed

To music people it is quite common to look at Mozart and Bach not as the greatest inventors but as the people who achieved the best synthesis of forms before them. All that a recreation with the certain spark. Where there should be nothing indisputable in art, science or culture or in no part of life in this world, still it is often said that Mozart and Bach were the two greatest geniuses of music and if this makes sense it means that as simple matter of fact of human art experience they made the greatest impact for ever more. And they were both as said not the greatest inventors in music history but the almost perfect creators of synthesis of beauty. Maybe Monteverdi or Hadyn invented more forms with similar undenyable truest spirit and spark, but as an end-point of a certain development of styles to beauty Mozart and Bach appear as the most accomplished creators in their places. One could think of pendants in other art forms...
So if for reasons of time, cultural situation and experience it seems not to be possible that the works of T.C. can be fully understood and appreciated now there is no other way at the moment to look by ourselves from time to time at what we have done and why. There is no fake motive of putting laurel on our own heads simply because T.C. is not a simple neat selfish little person of art illusive self expression but a collective although unfortunately it may until today only consist of one existence AP. But our work seems to appear as such a Mozart and Bachlike synthesis concerning experimental cinema. For a reinvention of more or less all techniques and visions of experimental cinema so far can be found in it, just by nature, often by coincidence, never as a mere copy or bloodsucking posthistoric play. The great variety of unceasing sparkling ideas combined with today, with the future of cinema if there is one, with the digital worlds.
So we cannot feel abashed by the fact of looking at our own work, liking, appreciating its growing importance and value and somtimes adoring it, quite uncommon among artists. And we like to thank the growing number of spectators in the internet underground who begin to acclaim that too. The internet is an already ruined great invention of mankind, the same old story, but still the only future place for a real progressive and transgressive underground movement, unfortunately we often have to add because of its fatal lack of touch.
Nevertheless, even if we see ourselves truly eye to eye with many works of experimental cinema, still there is one artistry that at times seems impossible to reach, the one of Ed Emshwiller. This vision seems to come closest to the view of Todeskino Collective, yet disappearing into a numinous shadow of adoration. Two dark shining pearls, one called after a woman and a song, the other the breathtaking "Thanatopsis" and our own favourite work as a humble response (?)...:
